Developed a telemedicine platform for the rehabilitation of older people at low cost.

Improving the quality of care received by patients with serious injuries such as acquired brain injury or a chronic disease, generated new medical challenges that are being resolved thanks to the bioengineering and telemedicine.

The European Union has created a consortium collaborating researchers from Spain, Italy, Netherlands and Poland called Project CLEAR (Clinical Assessment Leading Environment for the Rehabilitation of protocols in home care), with the idea of improving the standardization of e-health and rehabilitation services throughout
European territory.

Researchers from the UPM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), will work with this European consortium in the development and implementation of the platform "habilis" telemedicine platform that allows us to offer tele-rehabilitation for patients over 65 years old in the environment home under supervision.

This platform will be integrated into hospitals, with information systems that have their own health center, both technologically and clinically. The goal is that "physical therapists and neuropsychologists to offer these specialized services within the clinical routine". Said Enrique J . Gomez, ETSI professor and coordinator of the UPM team in the project.

Advantages and innovations benefit seniors divided into three main groups of patients:

1. Patients who have suffered a stroke, which must undergo a process of cognitive and functional rehabilitation beyond the specialized center, once the acute phase has passed.

2. Patients with complications such as chronic asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

3. The third group are those patients who have had their surgery, for implantation of a prosthetic hip or knee.
